Maetrik's "Quality Exertion" is one of those albums that, to me, reaffirms everything I love about techno. It's never too repetitive, and never too disjointed; its range of sounds and soundscapes keeps it interesting throughout. Think more minimal techno with a taste of dub, but keep it upbeat and a bit funky. Many of the tracks could be as easily appreciated on the dancefloor as at home with headphones, or driving down the highway. I think it also has a fair amount of crossover appeal - friends of mine who strongly prefer house to techno have enjoyed this immensely.
While the whole album is killer, the first three tracks are the best, I think. 'Inertia' has to be one of the absolute most enjoyable tech tracks I've heard, with its sophisticated blend of rolling minimal funk, chunky dub basslines, and airy keyboard work.
