Reviews & Discussion

Review by richardanvil1 May 08, 2008
No one needed to pretend this was a Potishead album to make it worth listening to. It is an absolutely gorgeous album with etherial, atmospherical tones and chilled beats. Madonna said it was her favourite album of 1998, which is surprising as it is a million miles from anything she has ever recorded. Guy Sigsworths production shines through with layer upon layer of sound topped by Steve Jansen's wonderful percussion. One track, All My Sins, includes samples from Talk Talk's 'I Don't Believe in You'.

This album was at the centre of a controversy involving Portishead. Someone expertly repackaged it and titled it "Pearl", claiming it was a new album from Portishead. Fans of Portishead often discussed the "obscure new Portishead album". While the album doesn't sound that much like Portishead, when I bought it I fell for the hoax, thinking Portishead had stripped down their sound and lightened up! Anyway, it's a good album, but definitly NOT Portishead. Beware!
