It is a fantastic concert recording of the best free jazz when this music was breaking jazz and music rules. The sound of alto saxophonist Marion Brown is quite unique and Porto Novo is one of his best recorded example and also the first in which dutch percussionist Han Bennink's distinctive style is blooming . Please note that this album (Arista Freedom AL 1001) is a re-issue of the original album (Polydor - AB Productions - AB for Alan Bates) issued in Holland in 1968. The picture of the original shows a colour shot of Marion Brown. It was Marion Brown who recommended Bennink to pianist Fred Van Hove and through Van Hove, Bennink came in contact with Peter Brötzmann. I love this album very much one of my favourite of this era as Ayler 's Spiritual Unity and Shepp's The Way Ahead.
