ALBUM OF THE MONTH:
Mark Hawkins – The Doomsday Clock (Crime-Productions)
It appears to be something of a milestone when both selected releases on this page are 100% digital as opposed to vinyl. The difference with this one though, is that it is currently up for free download on Hawkins' website (www.crime-productions.com) – a sign not only of his generosity, but of the harder job it is in marketing the almost obsolete techno LP that we see so little of nowadays. Featuring vocal contributions from Oliver Chesler (The Horrorist), Bill Youngman and AL.X.E. amongst others , it's the hypnotically looped vocals of Chesler on "The Doomsday Clock" that will probably work best on the dancefloor, in an album that is actually far more electro based than it is techno. Besides some of the signature Hawkins trickery that dominates insistent grooves like "Pitch Judgement" and "Three Minute Warning", there is also room for some deeper moments such as the Motor City tinged "Nice Keys" and the playful but plaintive synth assortment on "Bad Trip" - making this a release for many types of listener. A fine long player from Hawkins; let's hope he reaps dividends of some sort from this project other than just the total number of downloads. 9/10 (SS)
