Very bitter in places, but timeless soul all the way through - a very important part of the Marvin Gaye story.
Could be called a concept album, as the tracks are tied by the subject matter. A real journey through the downs of a relationship.
This starts in a very melancholic way. And gradually gets more and more angry. Until it all starts to calm down again with "Everybody Needs Love". From there it almost stops, and then picks up with a brilliant saxophone instrumental of "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You". This is sublime.
Marvin Gaye's voice is effortless.
