Solid and competent house music. Mateo & Matos certainly have their fingers on the pulse of house, and this pleasing album, NEW YORK RHYTHMS, is nothing to shake your finger at. Now, a few of the songs sound dated or would have been better had they used real instruments instead of synths (“Summer Groove” comes to mind), but it’s still nothing to turn away from. “Mama,” for instance, is deep and lovely, like a refreshing dip in a pool on a hot summer day. For those who need a disco injection, the aptly titled “Happy Feelin’” will fix you up good. “Keep on Dancin’” is also quite nifty, but in my opinion, the album needs something a little more to really lift it up. But if you’re okay with dancing, why not?
