Released on DJ SS's experimental (or, as it was called back then, Intelligent Drum & Bass, for whatever the reason) sister imprint to his mighty Formation Records, Matrix brought Drum & Bass up to speed with these two "dance" tracks on New Identity Recordings...
"Junk" for me is the "killer" track... This came out a year before Grooverider's "The Prototype Years" was to be released on Sony's dance imprint, Higher Ground. I remember this being played on one of Grooverider's Kiss 100 FM shows, which was aired on Wednesday nights between 9 pm - 11 pm, and the way he introduced it was "This IS big!!!" Having heard it, I couldn't help thinking to myself that Drum and Bass was moving into new territories, leaving behind the breaks of old and working with new, complex rhythms and beats that were cut up with simple, yet lush synth lines, and all mixed with the precise sensibilities of a "Plastic Man" trip. This, along with Mute, was what got Matrix tipped off to be one of the hottest producers of the time in 1996...
Grooverider dropped both sides of this choice cut at his and Fabio's experimental night that replaced "Speed" at the Mars Bar, off Sutton Square in London... Called "Tempo" (and for good reason), it set the pace for all "new bread" producers and flashed some of the hottest, most experimental Dub Plates floating around at that time...
"Junk" oozes simplicity with a spars, yet lush synth line intro, which eventually drops into these "new" (at the time) mangled beats... Totally set towards dancing, this number still pops up there for me... And when ever I drop it in a set, ears still prick up!
As for the other side to this release... Well, you'll just have to buy it and hear it to believe it!!!
