Reviews & Discussion

PROJECT UNISON is the long-awaited return of two of the stronger acts on the defunct Clear label, Metamatics and Clatterbox, each contributing four tracks to this album. Clatterbox seems less wedded to electro and leans more towards emotive work: “How I Missed You” builds and fades like a pro; “Allegro” is more allegro non troppo, but with lovely chords nonetheless. “Hard Cell” brings us back to the rhythmic-oriented Clatterbox, though it hums into life halfway through. Oddly, though Metamatics has been more prolific in the years since Clear, the electro-blip “Heddon Zara Spook” sounds as if it could have come straight off Clear in its heyday; the same goes for “Inbetween Fields.” It’s a refreshing course for both artists: Clatterbox moves forward, the Metamatics looks back on his roots. Somehow it makes perfect sense.
