Reviews & Discussion

Review by Vox-Peter May 27, 2009
This is not strictly a review. My name is Pete Geoghegan and I played keyboards and guitar with Mighty Mighty. I thought a little background may be of interest to you. We recorded the album Summer 1987. I think it took us four weeks in total with a little break before we mixed. We had already recorded Built Like A Car with John Rivers and we were looking forward to working with him again. Having a record company to pick up the bill was a dream come true. John, rightly or wrongly saw us as potential chart material and he was keen to clean up our sound and take advantage of the latest studio technology and sounds. This worked well on some tracks but not so good on some. John would remind us to "not be too precious" about our songs. Looking back, we should have stood our ground, especially when it came to using a session drummer on a couple of tracks - a decision we all regret. As I said earlier, some tracks stand up pretty well - Settle Down being my personal favourite. We'd already released four singles by the time it came to record the album and we made the decision not to re-record any of this material. Subsequently the album is not as strong as it could have been but it did mean that pretty much all our available songs at the time were recorded. The album was released in 1988 and we toured to support it. That year Chapter 22 dropped us, Hugh (lead singer) fancied doing something else and so we called it a day. Why should you buy Sharks? Some great songs and a snapshot of an indie band trying to break through at a time when that kind of stuff was not so widely accepted and rarely playlisted. Enjoy.
