Notes

Muzique Tropique began life in 1994. Initially it was the name of the label that Kevin Mckay and Andy Carrick used to release their own brand of deep house. They would change the names of each artist to give the impression that Muzique Tropique was a real label with bona-fide separate artists. 4 AM, West Coast Connection, Urban Revolution, Mystic Soul, American Intrigue and Communication X were the monikers they went under. By the end of '96 it was apparent that Muzique Tropique were one outfit and so Glasgow Underground was set up to house them (alongside some real artists this time). Their first release was 'Collection', an album that compiled the choice moments from the Muzique Tropique back catalogue and a selection of remixes from friends and fans of the Muzique Tropique sound.

COLLECTION brings together the work of Muzique Tropique (previously released on their eponymous label) and is a fitting launch to what would be one of the strongest deep house labels of the 90s, Glasgow Underground. This special edition packages the original tracks as a bonus to the main disc of remixes (featuring such luminaries as 16B, Abacus, Dubtribe). Of particular note: DIY and Toka Project’s deep and luscious take on “90° in the Shade” and the moody electro-tinged Two Lone Swordsmen mix of “Kingston.” Swag’s faster take of “Shipwrecked” gives the track some serious dancefloor heft, while the Idjut Boys go for a long and dubbed-out revision of “Stella Sunday,” reprising the sweet strings that introduce the disc. Some of the original versions show their age but still show a lovely prescience. “Siesta,” for instance, has a Spanish guitar as calming as its title suggests, while “Return of the Sea Turtle” melds a jazzy piano line with the smooth main rhythm. (Its brother, “Jazz the Sea Turtle,” wraps variations of the piano in deep tones delicious as chocolate.) For those who like their groove infused with chill, “4AM Theme” amply delivers the goods. Even at this early stage in their career, the Glasgow Underground boys show that they have talent and vision to burn.
