Nigel Hayes, half of the group Chaser, releases his first full-length, …But Is It Art? on the Viennese Sunshine Enterprises label. And while the question remains mostly unanswered, we have instead some nice juicy tracks of deep house. The opener, “Shriek (But Is It Art?),” is a quiet mid-tempo piece, while “I’m the Instrument” takes a more tribal tack. “Apocalypse” has a funky bassline that gets you moving, and “Bad Stone” has strings that get you thinking -- before it moves into a real funk. My favorite track, “Ode to Odyssey,” is a neo-disco funk track that doesn’t let up its smoothness for one second, but “Back Together,” a vocal track, doesn’t do much for me. “Makes Me Feel Real Good” slows things down to a nice mellow tempo, and the final track, “Detonate the Charge” is more minimal and dancefloor-oriented. All in all, a good album and a promising debut.

one of my all-time favourite records... full of rich textured tunes. it's got the flow, it's got the jazz, it's got everything...
