I would add only one thing to Spork's comment (the rest would be insulting): I'm not even sure you carefully listened to Adult. ... Adult. is working on an efficient minimalistic formula, questionning the melody in its popular effect on people. Adult. is working on dancefloor effect and this means melodic mediums and most of the time, no bass at all. Miller's in 1978 did not give a fuck to those art school's poseurs considerations, he just wanted to release this harsh repetitive no wave track telling bout carcrash erotic. Listen carefully on W.L: it's speedy, maybe 150 bpm or more, unmelodic, just the same loop sometimes slightly filtered, the rhythm is martial as ever, and the lyrics are hardcore (spin it in a party, you will see how the reaction can be different from Adult.'s LoveSick, ie). How can you pretend it's a weak track when Grace Jones made a cover of it?! This had been the 1978 underground planetary hit, spinned in Paris' Palace, NYC's CBGB, or London's Marquee... This track is to undaground what Blue Monday was to overground. And it's obvious that Blue Monday had the possibility to become an international hit in 1981 because W.L existed 3 years ago. So please don't make this kind of stupid comments when you're not documented... It's a real chance you people did not use the electroclash term to describe this electronic music masterpiece ;-) ...

A dear friend of mine once wrote - "It is amazing what can be done with only one tone". The record itself sounds amazing in every bit as if an accidental outcome over one's desire to create an all electronic single after years of fascination with the likes of Kraftwerk. As with The Cure's Camus study in 'Killing an Arab', 'Warm Leatherette' sumarises J. G. Ballard in merely couple of minutes. The flipside of 'TVOD' is another astonishing instant, mass irony over mass consumerism.

An accomplishment by minimalism that even works as a pop record. Even though it never tried to sound like one. I wonder if the guy ever tried to stick the aerial. A synth masterpiece that still works. Grab it.

For those interested this is still available on Mute label (catalogue number 001). It was the first 7 inch Mute released. This track still stands today. Wonderfull Cold Wave way ahead of it's time.

There are rumours about a story behind this. It was released in Germany as 12" in the year 1982 (INT 126.804). At the end of the 80s someone at Intercord was going through the back-catalogue in order to delete low-selling items. Well, warm Leatherette is a classic, but not at all a chart hit. So it went out of the catalog! - Later on they found out what happened and came to the conclusion, that it was a bad idea to delete Mute founder Daniel Millers own and very first release. So Warm Leatherette/T.V.O.D. was rereleases with new cat.no. not only on vinyl but also on CD. A truely oggers-fairytale!

This is the single which started MUTE records, and has been re-released twice on CD by MUTE. After releasing this, Daniel Miller, aka The Normal, focused mainly on the MUTE label, with various small excursions back into music-making over the years.

This must be the most irritating monotone song ever. However this was in the late '70's, so I guess it was a milestone then. The song was covered by many artists, most notable: Grace Jones.
