Plaid come up with another winner on REST PROOF CLOCKWORK. "Shackbu" continues in their weird, funky electro vein, while "Ralome," with its steel guitars, has a country-western feel. "Little People," on the other hand, starts off with some old skool hip-hop before establishing itself firmly in the new skool. “Dead Sea,” a string-based track, has a semi-classical elegance to it, while “Gel Lab” changes so many times that it almost seems schizophrenic. "Buddy," however, seems a little more aimless than their other tracks. But the quasi-Spanish guitar of “Pino Pomo” gives way to pure electronic groove. “New Bass Hippo” is bouncier than its title would lead you to think, and “Air Locked” takes its simple premise into unexpected places. Though I personally prefer NOT FOR THREES, the haunting, hidden track after “Air Locked” is as good -- if not better -- as almost anything else they’ve done.
