This album is ridiculously good, arguably the best work of Luke Vibert. There is so much going on, from cartoony atmosphere through LA noir mood to rave-nostalgic, melancholic melodies all pushing the right buttons. It sounds coherent, yet is very varied. This is drum and bass at its best; amen-heavy, sophisticated, playful, melodic. Just the fact that none of the songs is shorter than 7 minutes yet keeps you hooked until the last second tells about the quality of the album. The twenty second part of "Feelings" starting 4:57 is pretty much the best drum sequence ever, so many drum layers its unbelievable. Get it. Now.

~ "A Subtle Blend" is my favourite song of all time. Ever.

A singular vision of the hi speed breakbeat aesthetic, more like avant jungle than drum and bass. Absolutely a must to recommend to people who might say they don't "get" jungle etc., or might just be thinking of jump up or ragga. Play them this shit, they'll either get it in a blinding flash of satori or you might as well give up. Then play them 'The Self-evident Truth of an Intuitive Mind" by T-Power.

Junglists don't fear, this album is plenty heavy on the amen breaks... not so often looped as tastefully chopped and edited. Check out 'drum & bass for papa', 'feelings' and 'a subtle blend' for example. Strangely, years later these are still particularly resonant tunes for me from an album of favourites. Also on the EPs, you'll find plenty of even more heavily edited amens in 'military jazz' and 'cheesy (amen mix)' [though I'm not sure about that last one...]

You can't go wrong at all on this album. Every single song has crazy FLAVOUR! the samples are very nostalgic remenesing 70's R&B vibes with dark kung fu errie sounds with Pure luke vibert wackyness. Has the oldschool Drum n bass sound to it which most people would find annoying, however he turns this bitch inside out to be a helluva fun ear ride!. With a listen you notice how much effort and feeling went into this. i've been listening to this cd for 8 years it's just banging top to bottom.

This album changed my musical life. I picked it up after hearing Viberts track on the Ninja Tune compliation Flexistentialism 'Get Your Head Down' in the heady days of 1996. Hard to think that almost 10 years later i'm still raving about this record. I've played it to death and it still never ceases to amaze me with its sheer creativity. The little throwaway samples, the blending of the chinese chopsticks into the vocal "burn a little grass" - stunning. Not to trainspot this to death but i was watching the movie 'Barton Fink' and the scene where John Goodman walks down the hallway on fire screaming "I'll show you the life of the mind" - and bam! I was back to the first time i spun this for a crowd. I've listened to or bought everything 'old vibey' has done since but i think this is his masterwork, its brilliant, intelligent, musically clever and the way I wished drum and bass had gone after 1996.

Not to mention the fact that this album of hits transverses the stratosphere for sheer skill of music production. I always felt that there was an underlying tongue-in-cheek meaning in its title, that it was music your parents (even your grandparents) could love and have a hard time knocking. It's very melodic, not very noisy, and contains elements of the music from an earlier time - hence its tricky title. I have to say this may very well be the quantum epitome of 1990s music, blowing away anything that came out beside it, superseding all techno and all rock and metal forms of any kind in terms of musicianship and listenability and repeated listenability. You know how you buy that record and after twenty listenings you get bored with it and it gets shelved for ten years before you finally take it out again and see if you still like it? I must have listened to this album ten thousand times and I still hear little idiosynchrasies that I like and indeed never caught onto before. Can it be that good? Hands down - YES! It is that good! Listen and learn boys and girls...

THE best drum & bass album EVER! Simply mindblowing. Every minute is a suprise with a treat around every corner. The layer's of twisted breaks and jazzy atmospheres, combined with hip hop samples and electronic trickery all gel together and firmly plant this album into drum & bass legendry.

Easily my favorite work by Luke Vibert. His tuff as Plug warps the average concept of drum n bass into a free for all jazzy funk experience. The EP's are all amazing tracks and can be associated with his Wagon Christ work through various samples and breaks. An overal amazing collection of songs and my overall favorite drum n bass album ever.

Luke Vibert purveyor of fine fried funk food. Right now he is blessed with perfect cryogenic cool. But you would never guess it from the unrestrained energy of this album, a raw, clatterbox fusion of jump-up drum'n'bass, heavyweight g-funk grooves and twisted sampladelic vocal fusions, which is quite unlike anything else beeing served up by his contemporaries.

This album is incredible. This is drum n bass at its best. The tracks with numbers for titles are the best. The best part is, as far as I can tell, Vibert doesn't even need amen breaks throughout this whole album and it's still one of the best ones out there.
