Reviews & Discussion

Though Dominick Fernow had been recording and releasing material as Prurient for years prior to this, 'The History of Aids' was unquestionably his break-out album, the one where everyone sat up and took notice. On this release Dominick finds his own voice, combining a fresh approach to his sound with lyrics appropriated from the 13th century Persian poet known as Rumi. This is a dramatic departure from his earlier work based on cut-ups, as explored on releases like 'Body Language' and 'Dracula Syndrome'. In a genre that has explored the themes of sex, death, and violence ad nauseum, Dominick's decision to take the high ground and use this poet's verses (which are largely concerned with love) and overlay them with some of the most blistering sounds ever put to compact disc is to be commended.

Prurient is one of todays brightest noise artists. His live performances are agressive and brutal to the ears. The closest I have heard him come to the intensity of his live shows is History of Aids. This CD is one of the most brutal noise albums out there today. There is no contention for this album in terms of how destructive this CD is to the listeners ears. Even though it hurts you want to turn the volume higher and higher.
