"Benjamins" is offcourse the song we're talking about. Described by Biz Markie as the one jam he would spin in public if he was to play a single record that defines the term hiphop. Its use of the sped down sample of "I Did It For Love" by Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra is pure genius and will set any dancefloor alight if applied at the right time. Puffy's pompous Sean John empire made the "real" hiphopcrowd hate his guts, yet the man is responsible for some classic songs in the genre, this being a prime example. Like no other he understood what the public wanted, while the backpacks didn't have a clue how to get a crowd going he returned to simple EPMD aestethics with hard pumping beats and funky basslines. The braggin and boastin' content of the lyrics are questionnable from an ethical viewpoint but that might be of lesser concern when you're shaking your booty to it. There's lots of dodgy bootlegs (AV8 anyone ?) & crappy rock remixes doing the rounds but you'll do fine with this album version.
