Sometimes when I can't keep up with the current hot dub techno artists because of their prolific nature (Quantec, Mr. Cloudy, Zzzzra, Atheus, etc.) I tend to get overwelmed with the amount of material in fear that the music will get watered down with so many helpings. Not the case with Quantec's Synchrotron EP one bit. Wow. Sure my turntable has seen smokey wax spin before, and yes it was great dub techno, but this 12" is definitely one of my favorite Quantec releases.
"Synchrotron" itself is as smokey as the wax, as the distressed analog chords seem to swirl in a mist of reverberated swish sounds in the background, all linked together with the, perhaps standard, bassline & kick we're a bit familiar with I hate to confess, but to me the Maurizio sound never gets old. We all know what it means to "get lost" or "fall asleep" to a great dubby track, and indeed this entire A-side offers such a tranquilizing effect.
If anyone thinks dub techno has run its course, think again. The Synchrotron EP is a perfect example of how there are still fresh and dubby grooves out there just waiting for our needles to ride in. Hat's off to you, Sven Schienhammer... well done.
