Quirk - Machina Electrica & Fornax Chemica

While many people swear on the Quirk Bible, Quirk has also been a problematic act for me. Sometimes they come up with some really good stuff but most of the time they just bore me. In that vein Machina Electrica & Fornax Chemica would count as more of the same from Quirk. The first disc is pretty uneventful as far as I am concerned. Gagaku's Japanese koto work is interesting for the Japan buff in me for about a minute, before getting lost in the usual Quirk stuff. Dance With The Devil has some flashes of small brillance, but over all all four tracks are more or less throw aways. In a word they are just quirky.

Church of Sinister Footwork however turns things around with a nice epic track that gets the feet moving and the head bobbing. Straight forward, yet groovy and dark, Footwork is definately a keeper. Spy Vs. Spy is next and is another good track. Again groovy and a hair dark, here the bass succeeds in the effect most of the first disc seemed to be going for, but never reached. Disc two redeems the failures of disc one in a good way.

Disc three starts with Mystic Linguistic, a slower (although not downtempo) track that is moody and somewhat funky. Again a good track. Lofi Scifi adds some nice breaky. DnB elements to the mix. The mood is sort of spacey, yet off kliter and unstable. Its an odd, yet still interesting track.

The end result is that, as usual, its a mixed bag. The first 4 tracks I find to be nothing special, while the last 4 are very good with two excellent numbers in there.
