Less is more with the american version of 'Aftermath'. The english release features four other songs: 'Take It or Leave It', 'Out of Time', 'Mother's Little Helper' and 'What to Do'. 'Out of Time' is interesting. A nice pop melody combined with another Jagger put-down: 'You're obsolete, my baby, my poor discarded baby'. 'Mothers Little Helper' wouldn't appear on an album until "Flowers" for american fans. We get 'Paint It Black' instead. But 'Take It Or Leave It' and 'What to Do' are very uninteresting excursions. The american release omits these songs and one hardly notices.

"High and Dry" and "I Am Waiting" are truly underrated songs in the Stones' catalog. I still think 'Doncha Bother Me' is mistitled and should be called 'Doncha Follow Me'. 'Lady Jane' is still lovely baroque pop and 'Under My Thumb', definitely in the Top Ten of Rolling Stones' songs, is included here. The hit single included here ('Paint It Black' b/w 'Stupid Girl') does not wear well to my ear. "Paint It Black" is a bore after all these years. "Stupid Girl" is a curious Stones' song with its retro organ arrangement. It's a parody of the misogynist, unlike 'Under My Thumb's' real thing.

"Flight 505" is fun, with the barrelhouse piano (Ian Stewart?) reprising the classic riff from 'Satisfaction' in the opening. "Going Home" is for Stones' fans only. I get a kick out of it, but it's basically Jagger masturbating with the mike for eight minutes!

This album does showcase the songwriting talents of Mick and Keith. They've come a long way from 'Stoned'!

New to this site-I'm not sure this is where I should pose this observation: I have this album. The label on my album has "Side One" and Side Two" spelled out which is opposite from the "notes" description. I'm selling my collection & am trying to research items before I put them on market. This site is wonderful for identification, but I want to make sure what I post is absolutely correct. Thank you.

I strongly doubt this is an Israeli pressing, my guess is it's an unofficial one. I've got the same one with the same matrix numbers and on the back of the cover there is a "Swinging Dog Records" logo and the text "Collect 'em all, Made in Austria by SDR. LTD."

"Aftermath" finds the Stones in new territories. "High and Dry" is an engaging country tune. "Lady Jane" remains a fine example of baroque pop. "Under My Thumb" is signature Stones' misogynism. "Stupid Girl" is less so. Brian Jones must be credited for his marimbas on "Under My Thumb" and dulcimer on the exquisite "I Am Waiting". "Flightl 505" features some nice barrelhouse piano (Ian Stewart?) and throws in the classic "Satisfaction" riff (but for a moment).

"Goin' Home" is a meandering jam...Jagger masturbates for almost eight minutes here!
The weakest songs are all at the end. "Take It Or Leave It", "Think" and "What to Do" are merely filler; it does not detract from the American release that these songs are not included.

"Out of Time" isn't really Stones' music, but succeeds as straight sixties' pop. "Mother's Little Helper" rings as true today as it ever did. An interesting collection, not quite as eclectic as "Between the Buttons", but "Under My Thumb" is classic Stones (easily up there with their ten best songs).

The Label photo shows the Mono Label ! There is also an identical Stereo Label with the writing "STEREO" right after "Seite 1" and "Seite 2" - The Matrix Numbers are also identical, so is the record the same despite with and without Stereo remark ?
