France’s original dirty old man and electronic music pioneer, Serge Gainsbourg, gets the once-over by a group of remixers, many of them French. But the non-French remixers are just as respectful of Gainsbourg as their Gallic counterparts: Howie B. turns “Ballade de Melody Nelson” into a downtempo serenade; Herbert puts a quiet beat under “Bonnie and Clyde,” and The Orb go for ambient mish-mash on “Requiem Pour Un C….” But the French can deliver the goods as well: Demon Ritchie turns “Sea, Sex & Sun” into a house anthem; Chateau Flight dub out “Lola Rastaquouere” entirely; and Readymade send “Aeroplanes” into the stratosphere. Those looking for some club-friendly Gainsbourg will find Bob Sinclar’s tribal take on “Marabout” right up their alley. The OGM mix of “Five Easy Pisseuses” is down and dirty, while the Dzihan and Kamien mix of “Je T’aime… Moi, Non Plus” is all deepness and quietude. An outstanding example of how remixes can revitalize older -- and honored -- artists.
