Skinny Puppy - Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse

This album may not be everyone's cup of tea but for whatever reason on a gray day this album just presses the right buttons. My favorite is the album closer "Burnt With Water". There's just something about the mechanical timekeeper approach of the sort of tick tock noise that counts off the fours until the drums kick in. And when they do that beat - it rocks but yet it's so utterly simple. That's what I love about music! When that intangible hits you, you know it. I love the somewhat common in its day gated reverb on the kick. And as for other tunes on the album, well, that 808 is there in all its glory. I love that machine! And who doesn't? What makes this album also a joy is that you hear other machines at work besides just the 808. I don't know just what they were, but it's nice to not always hear only the 808. Great music for when you don't wanna dance the night away!

Allright…when this record turned up at my place, I fell in love with the cover and the weight of the vinyl immediately. And the number ”Bias 43” made me shivering, to say the least… When I first put this record on, I was troubled because of the rhythms and the lack of traditional recognition I expected from a Skinny Puppy release at the time. Today, more than twenty-two years have passed, and I’m still deeply in love with this album. I’ve listened to most musics since then and still; ”Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse” stands out to be the most naked and brutal record I’ve ever heard and - again somewhat troubled to admit - suspect I ever will hear. ”One Time One Place” is the perfect intro to anything you expect from anything and ”God’s Gift (Maggot)” makes you reborn, whatever you imagine of anythings. The perfect outro is ”Burnt With Water”, and if you don’t see why, I suggest you re-think why you’re reading this.

Very gothic sounding, electronic touching on trance, but with bursting energy. Ogre sounds like a serial killer much more here than in other albums. The race is close between, "Addiction", "Chainsaw", and "Deepdown Trauma Hounds." I place them in order of listing. I have always wondered what the reason was for these fillers that sound like audio representations of heroin withdrawal. The music is just nerve-wrecking. "Dig it" is also fairly cool and so are some of the tracks toward the beginning. Beware though: people who listen to Skinny Puppy are typically considered weirdos. Your typical girl will be quite disgusted with this coming out of your car CD player when you go to pick her up or drop her off.
