Owning most Ultimae releases I have to be frank; I don't offer all equal playing time. Reflective Frequencies, for instance, is one album I've never really taken a fancy to. Not that there is anything wrong with it. Chilled, dreamy, and amibient, it fits the Ultimae bill, but I appreciate a little more action.

Blue Light and Red Vortex therefore climbs well up my ladder of appreciation. This is still chill but with edge. Likewise Zone 12 easily provides atmosphere for a daze, but one for floating, not vegetalizing. Outlined Surfaces likewise.

As for the remainder, well, put on at the right hour they may serve as a nice back drop, but I have to be inspired to let this take me anywhere far.

The first album by Solar Fields reminds me very much of a soundtrack to some sci-fi PC game from the 90s. Not any in particular one, just the overall sound and mood. This album is a good fusion of downtempo and IDM. He became more ambient with later releases. The obvious influence of space is apparent here with the artwork and track titles (Red Vortex). I'd say I enjoy his later work better but this is a very worthy humble beginning. Tracks like Blue Light and Inherit Velocity really get me in the mood to watch a sci-fi movie with their deep, space-like rhythm. As one of Ultimae's first releases, this one is getting harder to find.
