Sonic Youth - Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth's self titled debut was released in 1982 on Glenn Branca's Neutral imprint. Their debut record adequately illustrates the band's ancestry in the NYC "no-wave" scene, of which Branca was a key player, in groups like Theoretical Girls and The Static. Although the music is invariably stamped with the signature guitar madness which would make them (in)famous later, the album is an interesting little curiosity of drone, repetition and some surprisingly dance-able grooves - compliments, no doubt, of one-album drummer Richard Edson, who would later drum for Konk and become a successful film actor. The album was re-released in 1987 by SST on CD, CS and LP. Curiously, when DGC reissued the band's back catalog in the early '90s, "Sonic Youth" was not included. Only the track "I Dreamed I Dream" was included on the DGC best-of-the-indie years comp "Screaming Fields Of Sonic Love."

"Sonic Youth" was expanded and reissued again in 2006 by Geffen on CD and the band's own Goofin label on vinyl.
