Program notes by Kid Baltan:
Side A:
Just to see what happens, let's follow the composer on an exploration of the jungle of sounds... Around us, the freakish shapes of birds, insects, plants and towering trees move elusively under constantly changing lights, gradually lose their 'natural' character and so become increasingly abstract. Tension grips us. A menacing darkness seems to threaten us with the damp chill of utter isolation. But now, as strong daylight floods the view and picks out familiar shapes, foreboding is followed by a sense of relief that gives us the courage to proceed once more. Our purpose is to find something new.
Side B:
A fantastic vision of operating machinery, impossible to achieve under 'real' conditions, when speed, power and heat make close inspection out of the question. Now, in an effort to plumb the mysteries of working parts, we approach closer and closer, see them grow larger and larger around us until we are on the very brink of safety and further advance becomes a step into disaster. Just so far does "Mechanical Motions" take us.
