French hip-hopper Tommy Hools might not be as well-known as his house-oriented countrymen, but by no means does this mean that his work isn’t just as worthwhile, if not more so. Shut Up! is a collection of his tracks both original and remixed by the likes of DJ Cam, Terranova, Kid Loco and Doctor L. For the most part, the beats are solid and the melodies are worth their weight in French perfume. The Scotch mix of “United,” for instance, sings sweetly. Both the “Barcelone” mix by DJ Maggio and the “Le Levant” mix by Oma have an underlying melancholy. The originals of “Barcelone” has the same approximate mood, although “Le Levant” has an Arabic flair. “Milan” is much peppier, and “Le Couchant” is lounge jazziness. “Paris” rounds out the album simplicity and grace. This is how hip-hop should be.
