Notes

Two recycled vintage shellac 78's
each with one side of new recorded music by Vance Orchestra.
Handmade, limited to 100 copies

One side of each 10" is Vance Orchestra and plays at 45rpm the other side is a different artist each copy (the original vintage shellac recording) and plays at 78rpm.
In effect both records are one-sided

The Vance Orchestra side is not pressed like regular vinyl but casted, using a technique specially developed for this release.

This double 10 inch recycled music set clearly fits within the sub-genre of reprocessed vintage shellac records, and expands that genre. This is certainly the most extreme example to date. Many groups have sampled old 10 inchers while others have remastered the actual recordings for public domain re-use. Examples are Victrola Favorites compiled by the Climax Golden Twins, or Yeast Culture's Rena Leicia which sampled and included a vintage record. Rund Um Den Watzmann has created instead a retro art object hybrid of old and new. Each record is playable on both sides, but whereas one side is really a vintage shellac record, the flip side contains the murky barely audible sounds of Vance Orchestra in a new pressing. It's hard to see any difference between the two sides, as this joining has been well done to make it truly appear as one record.
My copy of this release plays without tracking errors on the vintage side, but the Vance Orchestra side is skip city. The experience of playing this back is like selecting loops. I let it play until it skips, loops for a few minutes, then reset the needle for a new section. There are a lot of interesting sections to choose from, although the recording level remains a bit low compared to the vintage side. And, there are two records to sample from. This record is a departure from the norm in terms of sound and medium itself, with great conceptual space. The corrugated printed cardboard case is impeccably presented, and provokes inquiry into the proper storage of vintage vinyl.
