"Happy Little Wilberforce" by Tom Jenkinson (bka, Squarepusher) is, in my opinion, one of the most under rated 'pusher tracks. Noone seems to know about this song, and I stumble across it through random downloading. The edits are absolutely amazing - this track really makes me wonder what he was using (equipment and chemical wise!) to compose this. It makes perfect sense to me, but when I play it for others, they say it sounds like the cd is skipping. Fools!

I tend to look back on genres after they went bad like spoilt milk, and drum-n-bass is certainly no exception. The time just flies by so quickly you just don't know what hit you after it already crashed to the ground. In the earliest days of drum-n-bass, innovation was everywhere and creativity was at the peak of perfection. This compilation is a great example. Each track is different and many styles combine to form an excellent representation of the genre of drum-n-bass music. Later in 1997 I personally started noticing that drum-n-bass was going through exactly what techno went through a couple of years earlier - a stasis. That is - it was getting stale. Repetition and blandness were pervading the genre. But this collection features the better time in drum-n-bass, when new things were still happening. These tracks are all excellent, none of them bore me to death and a few really move me. You must check this out to get an idea of real musical innovation when electronic music was still pretty darn exciting. See what you think...
