Various ‎– Clicks & Cuts 5.0 - Paradigm Shift

After reading the debate of principles over the right to continue Mille Plateaux, I have to say that I disagree with both sides. One the one hand it was Achim's brainchild, but why not continue it in his vein? On the other hand the answer of new labelowner Marcus is quite childish and posting his press release as a review with 5/5 here, really disqualifies him from this debate.
Now, nobody spoke about the music yet, and I will have to give it a try: What do we get here? In comparison to older C+Cs this in not so much a mixed bag, the songs all sound rather the same, as if made by the same artist. That can be because giving the "new old" label an identity, but it also making the compilation a bit boring. It is glitch, most of it sounds like Autechre circa 1993, so the "Paradigm Shift" doesn't seem to be a big one, this time. I think you easily get the impression here, that someone wants to cash in with the established idea of glitch music. I find it okay to release "old genres", as you can see with the new jungle/dub trend, but there definitely has to be some kind of innovation in it. You cannot release Beatles-styled songs today without referring to the original and expecting the people are not comparing. There are many tracks on this compilation, all of them with a standard length of circa 4 minutes (I found out, that the tracks are edited to that standard length for including them all - that is really a bad idea, standardisizing the already samey tracks even more), and I really find it hard to find a song that really sticks out. Sure, it is warm and electronic music, but nothing I want to hear again. Ametsubs "Repeatedly" and Marows "e.coli" are the only tracks I can recommend. The only good thing about MP 2.0 is that I am going to listen again to the old MP 1.0 releases!

mille plateaux as well as a bunch of other labels of force inc. was founded by achim szepanski who was a distinguished philosopher still active in this field lecturing about the philosophical legacy of gilles deleuze and other associated philosophers. the label attained its legendary status as all other legendary labels through the personality of its founder. putting it plain: force inc. and mille plateaux were cool because achim is cool. philosophy fed the label, it's not a game like it is now for relaunchers (read all there quasiphilosophical sentences on the site). the problem with the comp is the same as with all such relaunches: they will never truly understand what was actually behind each release, how achim judged about their potentials and many others. again: achim never wanted to become cool for coolness sake. it just happened, it simply came while he was doing his thing later also came money and fame.
musically the new version of the label might be a good start to get to know glitch, idm and other fashionable and hype genres from the past. if you want something truly new, not quasi-new, then forget about mille plateaux 2.0.
btw achim could relaunch it but he never did it. it's a good point to start thinking that glitch, idm and other fashionable and hype genres from the past are dead now and he doesn't see anything interesting there. clicks & cuts 5 as a compilation of dead music, a musical necrophilia?

this release is almost 10 years too late, and reaches not even the level of the first clicks & cuts releases of original mille plateaux label by oval in 1994 or snd in 1996.
