So imagine my excitement upon unearthing a compilation with 'Hardbag' in the title! I was very pleased, until I put it in the CD player. Never mind, at least the money went to charity.
The first problem I have with this compilation is that all the tracks are 12" mixes. Nothing wrong with that, except that once you've skipped the 12" version of 'Fee Fi Fo Fum' and the awful 'update' of "I'm Rushing' by Bump (as usual, the original's better) and fast forward through a few lesser known tracks, you've finished a disc. You see, there are some tracks on here by artists most people have never encountered before, because they're really not very good. Funky See Funky Do's 'Deeper' is one of the most bland tracks I've ever heard, and barely worth calling hardbag.
Nevertheless there are a couple of good moments (Justine's 'Want Me Love Me' being one of those very few, thought that guitar bit is very irritating), although I would've preferred the Tony De Vit mix of 99th Floor Elevators' 'Hooked', not the original. Really if you want hardbag, I'd recommend the second disc of Kiss In Ibiza 95, which is entirely devoted to hardbag anthems and remixes.
