A must own for all fans of the grey techno sound from Birmingham. Top notch selection of tracks, ranging from Surgeon's classics off the "Magneeze" vinyl, through to some old and rare Hostage tunes, back full circle to Regis We Said No and Allies. No exception, all tracks are very mechanical, with a really punishing drive and banging percussion. Pure techno, with balls of steel and fear of no man. Favorite track must be Surgeon's Badger Bite, with unbelievably sharp and eerie strings tirelessly barking at you for over seven minutes. Intense and so furious it's impossible to resist it. I'd dare take it even further and claim Anthony Childs absolutely dominates this compilation with the inclusion of seven of his tracks, most of them ferocious techno bangers which carry out their task of absolutely shredding dance floors apart. Some of this material is so damn determined to make you drive your head inside the wall - dry, monotonous and linear sound patterns which became synonimous for a whole new breed of hard, nasty and rusty techno for years to come.
This could be one of the most competent label overviews I own, with a fair chunk of the Downwards imprint defineing moments getting presented in one place. Get it if you're willing to explore the darker side of the rainy country. Don't stop here though, these are only the 'welcome to the club tunes', there are many more resting under the surface.

Brilliant monotonic stuff from the Downwards artists. I'd say this collection is essential for all mono enthusiasts.
