Various - Hated Perversions

Hated Perversions is my favorite release to come out of Freak Animal this year. Continuing the extreme sexual themes which have been the main focus at Freak Animal this lately, Hated Perversions explores the most reviled and loathed fetishes through power electronics. These fetishes include incest, male rape, erotic asphyxiation, and sadism. The booklet which accompanies them allows each artist to visually express their own fixation. While the art may upset some pansy noise listeners, its purpose goes beyond shock value. It's the demand for these images and movies which continue the cycle of exploitation and abuse, nothing is out of bounds. Hated perversions are hated because of the social stigma and the shame attached to them.
These feelings of shame, self-loathing and persecution are embodied in the music. Personal obsessions are turned into waves of feedback. Hated Perversions is especially successful because there is great variety between the artists. Everything from simple analogue PE to vocal/laptop style PE is utilized. Lately Mikko Aspa's sound has been more caustic and analogue oriented which is reflected in his Nicole 12 and Grunt material here. Sick Seed's Agenda focuses on a simple industrial loop and fuzzy distortion over tortured vocals. Excellent track. Taint's Dedicated to Male Rape Group is easily my favorite Taint track now. Starting with low, raspy breathing and then bursting into high-pitch squeels and junk-metal scraping; it captures the power struggle and abuse that is rape. My favorite two songs come from artists I was previously unfamiliar with, Control and Eleczema. Both have a cleaner electronic side, with heavily treated vocals. Ice Cold Enema is just so hateful and perverted, it stands out even amongst the array of excellent material presented here.
