Reviews & Discussion

Rated 5/5
Review by Lektronikumuz Dec 16, 2007
First two-disc soundtrack was originally issued by Cisco music and was for sale throughout the 2004 celebration of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (the disc was re-christened Movement: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival 04 due to legal matters that year). All of the artists presented on this disc performed at the festival, representing a wide range of sounds, textures, and styles. Much to curator Kevin Reynolds' credit, the songs selected are sequenced in such a logical, smooth progression that make the disc easy to listen to and accessible for even the most casual of dance music fans. It's not a definitive overlook of Detroit techno, but rather a reference point for electronic music connoisseurs to gauge the state of Detroit electronic music circa 2004. A blend of the old-school (Kenny Larkin, Jeff Mills) match up track for track with up-and-coming artists (Jimmy Edgar, Dabrye, Ayro, Matthew Dear) who are the heirs apparent of the Detroit sound, and just listening to Movement is almost like being at Hart Plaza on Memorial Day weekend. Almost.
