Reviews & Discussion

Rated 5/5
Review by enfantterrible May 16, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
The artistic obsessive fascination about WW2 period leads this time to another set of places and faces.
Instead of the uniforms and the guns then the bordello and all the desires contained in there, Instead of the "ersatz" represented in the will of power and control then the absolute dedication to hedonism and despair at the same time, Instead of the dedication to political alienation then the absolute compromise with pleasure as a manner of escape from a harsh reality.
A world of contrast. A world that seeks destruction and domination versus a world that seeks joy and love in a place that no longer have none of these.
This compiled work somewhat captures this 1940s spirit and diverts the listener with its quality songwriting and performance. The three first songs are just perfect. The beautiful sensual and dark voice from Nicki Jane transports you to the atmosphere of the cabaret in old Berlin.
Very impressive also is the performance from Rozz Williams (who appears in here also).
The only song that doesnt really fit in here is the one from "Audra-Cabaret Fortune Teller" which is more darkwave/gothic sound but probably Sam Rosenthal included it becouse of the content more than the form.
So this work touches a subject that had remained more or less forgotten in recent times. War drums and delirium for combat its somehow more prominent and attractive than the simplicity of the cabaret music and all its other more carnal offerings.
Interesting that even thought the Cabaret doesnt exist anymore its music style and aesthetic still has a prominent and relevant role in this times and age.
We all live now in the cabaret of time!
