Paste brings us "Krank" which is more in the minimalistic vien. Not a great track, not a bad track. A few cool sounds, but not a track that I can really imagine myself driving home and thinking "I wanna listen to "Krank" when I get home". The crazy Loopus In Fabula is next up with their crazy brand of trance. Goofy and funky is the best I can use to describe these guys. Their albums have been released on Demon Tea, which should give those in the know a sense of they general vibe. That said Loopus have somewhat more focused track structure than, say Pe Lin Pala (another Demon Tea nutso artist) and thus their tracks are a lot more listenable and usable to the dj. Anyways I'm digging "O'Tuicco" here. good stuff.
The next offering here is Aumphibian "Robozyme". Another solid track. The comp appears to have taken a turn away from the minimal side of things and are edging somewhat to the more fuller on side. Robozyme is sort in between... too complex for minimal, not quite full on, its a decent cut of general psy that can serve as a transition piece into or out of many sub-genres of psy in a dj's set.
Dark Nebula gives us "Sonic Disturbance". This comp seems to have something of a percussion driven vibe through out it so far and this track is no different in that regards. We also have some nice 303 sounding squelchy parts. This track is sort of a mix of the newer psy sound with some of the older darker goa synth and sample sounds. While not of classic caliber, this is still a refreshingly "old" sound.
"Ruroid" by Tromesa continues the trend. Some understated, but still a little old school synth lines fly about over an interesting hollow kick sound. Again, not classic, but still good. Space Tribe is next with "It Might Lead Anywhere". The album as definately been leaning more and more old school and thus the build up to Space Tribe is only nature as Space Tribe is one of the few people making unabashed full on "goa" anymore. This track is no different. High energy, squelchy, buzzy, nutso goa here. Definately the highlight so far.
Magus is next and is, no surprise by now, pretty old school sounding. Outside of the first three tracks, I can almost see this comp being at home with a 98 release rather than 2001. "Egoes in, Egoes out" has a bit of a "marching" vibe at first, but continues to develops and sucks you in nicely.
Closing the album we have "So" by Man On Earth. No surprise we are going into full ethinic "goa" mode here. A very nice old school track of the sort you don't hear enough of anymore. Its also a great closer for the comp.
While this isn't a classic comp, it is still a quality release. Fans of the older goa sound in particular will find this comp bringing back some memories. Probably not a comp that you would hunt down per se, but if it came up, it'd be something worth buying.
