Reviews & Discussion

Certainly an excellent compilation, and a nice picture of the sound of Winter 1990, provided thanx to the proactive attitude of Radio Maxximum, the first radio station to air techno-house for a large public in France. The only downside is that most tracks were edited down to the length of a single. But, thanx God, and unlike the following ones in the serie, tracks are not mixed. And the track list is simply excellent, with no filler, only killers.

This compilation was one of the first about "real" techno available in France. I remember I bought it in cassette format when it was released in 1991 because it represented the sounds I wanted to hear: fat beats, weird noises and nothing to do with soft sounds from Chicago House... Then I found the double CD box in a second hand shop something like 8 years later for the tenth of the price I had bought the cassette. Back to 1991, I really loved this compilation, and listened to it a hundred times. Now, in 2006, that is 15 years later (gosh!), it has become a real best of what had been done in that time: those tracks are now considered as the basis of todays Techno and their creators are the founders of electronic dance music. This compilation is part of History and is a must have for those who want to know how it all started.
