Reviews & Discussion

Review by ElGregos May 27, 2004
I don't know, the chosen tracks are good ones, but I'm really bothered by the permanent "This is the sound of Vikter Duplaix, feel it", "be prepared for Vikter Duplaix", "exclusively for you from Duplaix, Vikter Duplaix". In any of the DJ-Kicks collection, he must be the only one who dare put himself so in front. Yeah, OK, it's the sound of Vikter Duplaix, right, we'll know it. Once was enough, and maybe already too much. I don't know why he did this, I find it really disturbing and extremely pretentious, I assume this guy has a really high opinion of himself and a overexpanded ego. Sure, I can too put tracks one after the other, not even mixing them, and above all put everywhere "This is the sound of ElGregos". Nice. How humble.
Personnaly, the only really good side of this DJ-Kicks is that it made me discovering Herbert, of whom I can't get enough since. And I rather, anyday, listen to Kemistry & Storm or Kid Loco DJ-Kicks instead of this one. They're not, of course, exactly the same kind of stuff, but at least these are very good works, great tracks well mixed, and don't have that lack of humility.
If this guy is so in love with himself, may he stop parasiting other people's music and keep making his own, with this ridiculously over-caricatured sensuous voice so characterictic ?

a very special dj-kicks mix ; it ain't a real mixed cd , mostly some spoken vocals from a female macIntosh-voice shouts:" listen to the sounds of vikter duplaix ", or someone else does it . So you can't judge the actual turnovers . But the trax are perfectly choosen and he manges to keep my interest by selecting favourite artists of mine , involving mostly pretty obsure mixes or releases . the three tunes , most people know are working mainly as change-over signals in musical style within the mix, that is varied , but sticks to broken beats and orchestrated downbeats , throwing in some Soul and Hiphop ('Bag Lady' and a De La Soul Song ) .. fine compilation that can stand repeated listening , without offering too much easy listening stuff . Tracks 4-10 are my personal highlights . excellent stuff from HerbertP'Taah (Opaque rmx) and esp. Track 10 = Shawn Lee's - "Happiness" (Ashley Beedle's West Coast Mix) is standing out by a mile ..... highly recommended cd from the classy - mixed series ..
