Reviews & Discussion

Review by Nostradamus7 May 15, 2009
When you have 600gb worth of music it is easy to dismiss an album. I'm not sure whether I did that in my previous review, however be sure this album is worth it. WC is easily one of the best rap musicians. Rap is a dying genre, however I will always have WC to remind me of the height of this genre. WC has never been a #1 selling artist (as far as I know) and the reason is simple; he is much more concerned about quality than anything else. This album is necessary for any WC fans. Like many other rap artists, I wish WC would break away from the typical gansta rap style; while his voice is certainly unique, i wish his style would take a unique turn (in the manner, not style, of European rappers). What can be said of WC? The same thing that can be said of Ice Cube, he is an incredible vocalist/lyricist without a unique-enough direction. This album should kick ass for the average intelligent gansta-rap fan, but the true connoisseur wishes WC would accomplish the role of innovator in music rather than simply delivery.

"Guilty By Affiliation" is a hard album to review. It's such a turning point for WC, although not necessarily in a positive way. Initially I put this album down for good due to the over use of chorus, which is rather disgusting since verse-vocalist Ice Cube participates in many of the choruses. The album is a shot at two target audiences, the uncompromising 'gangster rappers' and the commercial rap gangster rap scene. the album fails on both fronts, but offers some value. the verses are often very solid, but are often pushed to the sideline in favor of the chorus. WC is not a chorus vocalist, period, neither is featured guest Ice Cube. I wish both artists would either decide to make a record for themselves or for the charts so I wouldn't have to decide whether or not its worth my time.

you can't deny the standout verses in this album, just kill the fucking choruses.
