Dismantling and re-assembling his 303 bassline machine from Roland, Winkelman gives us this break-beat infused acid builder.

You will know the Tweekin' Acid Funk version, which became a blueprint for both big beat and UK hard house. You may be familiar with the other versions of the first release (Wink's Hardhouse mix, the 611 Acid Groove), but the true ear-opener is the "album version", only featured on the German release.

So to say: this track started as a downtempo acid-triphop number, with the unfiltered, undistorted, unabridged vocal "love is an opening, an opening to a higher state of consciousness", making the track more suitable for achieving contentment in your yoga session rather than setting dance floors on fire. The track was part of a concept named "The Deep & Slow" and initially not even meant to be released as a single. However, three dancefloor-minded versions were released, of which "Version 3 - Tweekin' Acid Funk" became a landmark dance track.

has anyone any idea what the breakbeat remix of this track is doing the rounds, Im a massive fan of the original and used to cane it back then but this remix is very true to it only with a more breakbeat type theme (no electro or funk). Would love to know whos done it?

The Tweekin Acid Funk remains a unique track.
Back when it was released, this one came as an absolute UFO and blew almost everyone's head off, pushing acid to some uncharted frequency limits, plus the use of raw breakbeat makes quite a fresh and rockin dancefloor mixture.
So after almost 12 years and despite the fact that this might be one of the most overplayed records of the 90s, I still have tenderness for this warrior acidbreaks anthem, eventhough one could argue that Josh Wink's production might sound a little too simplistic and not crafted enough to make it 100% timeless.

The thought of a track like this doing major league chart damage now is unthinkable, but it really did happen.

The 'Original Tweekin' Acid Funk Mix' is the one that does the damage. Insane squiggly high pitched acid with ordered breakbeats is the order of the day here. What really elevates this track above the plethora of acid records that were around at the time though is the background tension - a trick possibly learned from Hardfloor.

Quite literally a mad record.

After almost ten years, still a very intense tune. I like it how Josh Wink has been very basic and minimalistic about this one. It is actually a simple track and he could have made this in a few hours without too much engineering knowledge, but the structure and the soundscape is great. Unique and an all time anthem.

to be fair there isnt any decent remixes of this tune.this doublepack is just another way to over exploit the original.but it still gives people another chance to obtain THAT original mix. it was dropped at every club throughout the country for ages before anyone knew what it was.the look on people's faces when the infectious acid 303 sample and those messed up funky breakbeats kicked in was pure confusion.

at the time it came out the vocal and bouncy house scene was at its peak and trance and progressive house were just becoming massive but this just threw everyone.what a classic anthem it was and still is and although it was hammered by radio stations and tv shows it still earns respect if played in the right set.

(I use this word advisedly.)

This track is bonkers, still.

I hadn't actually heard it in ages, and a mate had it on a tape in his car, and I was totally taken aback at how good it still sounds...

It's mental, and would still have the same response if it came out today.

The best squelchy acid noised on a record ever, I reckon.
