Reviews & Discussion

When this album came out it had a big influence on me, being released right when the deep jazzy sounds in dance music had really matured & the selection these boys had brought together really displays this. A must for those that appreciate deep underground house & down tempo vibes with a real organic, classy flavor. On a side note, the version of Mato's-Drifting appears to be different to that on the vinyl release; perhaps a special extended edit ?

The sleeve on the CD claims 'superb mix...to set the mood for those late night sessions'. Well, it need not be a late night to enjoy this selection as 'Happy Feeling' by Mateo y Matos will get you up and about anytime of the day. In fact, the first disc is my preferred of the two, tracks 4 through to 12 flowing nicely, the highlight being the Ron Trent produced 'African Blues-Word Sound Power' by Urban Sound Gallery-the tribal rhythms are intoxicating! The second disc is definately downtempo, but is lovely and reaches it's climax with 'Out of the Storm' by Incognito, a beautiful track that is at once relaxing yet engaging. Some of the mixes leave something to be desired, tracks being brought in but then rather ubruptly cut, but generally the boys of X-Press 2 seem to understand key-mixing and how to ride the pitch. All in all 4 out of 5 and probably the most satisfying of the Ministry of Sound compilations, alongside Late Night Sessions 3.
