Obituary

Obituary

Profile:
Obituary are a death metal band from Tampa, Florida. Formed in 1985 as Executioner, then changed spelling to Xecutioner, the band changed their name shortly before the release of their first album Slowly We Rot in 1989. The band are regarded as influential proponents of the Floridian death metal sound that emerged in the late 1980s and officially they are one of the best-selling death metal bands of all time.

Following the release of their fifth album - 1997's Back From The Dead - Obituary disbanded, although a live album Dead surfaced a year later.

In 2005 the band reformed, recording the reunion album Frozen In Time, since then, the band has continued to tour and release new material.

Respect to them! When Obituary were released their debut album SLOWLY WE ROT, back in 1989 & they were the pure innovators of that death metal Area movement (Florida), some other bands ( we call them 'death/black metal' now ) were playing MONOPOLY at their houses.

There's no doubt in mind that Obituary are at the top of their game - be it death metal, thrash metal or metal in general. Unlike many of their peers, they don't rely on shock values, but in general they can still beat listener into submission. They also don't rely on the same tempos and you can actually hear variation among songs, which is quite an achievement for otherwise limited death metal genre. Occasionally John Tardy sounds like acne-sprayed teenager, but that never detracts from the overall experience. All in all, one classy band.
