Egyptian Lover

Real Name:
Greg J. Broussard
Profile:
Los Angeles-based producer Greg Broussard was the man behind pioneering hip-hop/electro fusion artist the Egyptian Lover.

Egyptian Lover records didn't start appearing until several years after the New York and Miami electro scenes were already in full swing, by the mid-'80s Egyptian Lover cuts like "Egypt, Egypt" were standards among club DJs, particularly in the breakdance scene. Early cuts such as "Computer Love" and "Dance" were among Egyptian Lover's most experimental, with the material appearing through the latter half of the '80s increasingly flirting with full-blown rap by adding more vocals and melodic hooks. While more of his material dates from the latter phase, it's his earlier releases that remain his most accomplished, and they're routinely namechecked by a new generation of producers such as Autechre and I-F inspired by electro's first wave. Also a member of Uncle Jamm's Army and the force behind a half dozen labels including Freak Beat and Egyptian Empire. After nearly a decade, Egyptian Lover released the digitally edited compilation "Pyramix", then hit the studio again and produced new tracks in the same funky electro style for the album "Back From the Tomb".

Are you O.K. with your music being labeled as "hip-hop/electro?" Myself as well as other see it as what it was called back in the day, "Free-Style-Funk"

What a legend, and a very respectful individual. He said yes to this quick interview. He has a new Album coming out soon, "1984", how fitting, for this was the year it all got started across the nation, a literal fit was thrown if you didn't play him. The youth of the 90's would sometime's giggle at him, but clearly, the joke is on them. Please enjoy this interview...

1) What would you consider your fav. track?

My favorite track from me would be "You're so Fine" and "Egypt, Egypt"

My favorite track from others would be "Planet Rock"

2) Can you remember the wildest night BITD while touring, and which city was the best outside of LA <(:O)>

The wildest night would have to be Las Vegas, Vegas is wild every night. The best city outside of L.A. would be New Orleans. great people, great food, great music scene, and an all around great place. I have done many shows in Louisiana and I consider that my second home.

3) How well did you manage ur money at such a young age when every club was playing your tracks and when the club scene was huge all over USA.

I made more money than I could spend. I have my own record company and distribution company so all the money came to me. (No middle man). It was a great way to put out records in the 80's. Today artist are starting to do the same. No need for the big time record companies with they have Internet today. I guess I was a bit lucky and smart at the same time. I am financially set for life.

4) Why such Remix neglect for the early pioneers of Electro etc? Are you still in touch with the krews?

I keep in touch with many of my fellow old school peeps, we will always be friends. The 80's in L.A. was such a dream to all of us. We had so much fun and made money doing so.

"Remix neglect"? I'm not sure what you mean? But me myself I re-mixed what I wanted to, "Dubb Girls"

5) What is the future for Egypt?

I am still doing shows all around the world and am working on a brand new album "1984"

During my show I D.J. old school vinyl to show how we did it back in the day, I play the 808 Drum Machine Live, and I perform my songs and do the Dance Steps from the 80's to show how we used to Party. It's a great Old School show and a must see for anyone who loves Music or simply loves to Dance.

6) Do you have a record coll.?

Yes I have many records from the 70's 80's and 90's. Mostly 12" singles and I still play them.

7) How did it all get started, and how old were you

It all started when I was in High School making Mix tapes for my friends and DJing for the lunch dances. I used to put Egyptian Lover "custom" raps on my mix tapes and sale them to everyone. It was in 1979 when Rappers Delight came out and people wanted to hear more rap. I simply gave the people what they wanted.

8) What kind of car did u drive BITD?

I mostly drove my Mercedes Benz SEC (the one on the Greatest Hits cover) I had an incredible sound system in there and the car was AMG so that would just make me happy to drive around town and flaunt my stuff. Everyone knew it was me when I drove up. That car was Fly!!!
