Adolf Wölfli

Adolf Wölfli (* 29. Februar 1864 in Bern; † 6. November 1930 in Waldau) was a Swiss artist and writer. From 1895 to his death he lived in the psychiatric clinic in Waldau near Bern, where he produced an oevre of more then 1400 drawings, more then 1500 collages and 25000 pages of writings. He is considered one of the most important early Art Brut and Outsider Artists. Surrealist André Breton considered him among the 3 or 4 most important artists, in 1948 Jean Dubuffet showed 120 of Wölfli's drawings, and in 1972 at the Documenta 5 in Kassel a part of the show was dedicated to him.
