Altar is a Dutch Death metal band from Coevorden and Hardenberg.
The early band's name was MANTICORE, formed in 1988. It was changed for ALTAR in 1990.
They broke up in the fall of 2001, but guitarists Marcel Verdurmen and Richard Ludwig got back together and reformed the band with a new lineup. Former drummer Sjoerd Visch is now in a band called To Elysium, and former vocalist Edwin Kelder performs guest vocals on the latest album from I.N.R.I.
