Reviews & Discussion

After watching the Das Ist Elektro DVD of Rother playing live at Fuse Club. I think Anthony shows that his music comes from well within the heart and not from the pocket. You can't expect those who make music from the heart to keep going after the same emotions provoked in earlier releases to please everyone.

Anthony Rother's style of electro is up there with Kraftwerk's Computer World style electro. I keep buying all his releases and keep getting disappointed that he does't resort back to his early Sex With Machines era electro. He's getting sidelined with all this experimental ambient material that everyone is ignoring right now. I see his Fax Ambient releases just sitting in the binds brand new waiting for someone like me to buy them. In the meantime they're just gathering dust and eventually will be placed in the clearance bins.

I fell in love with his work when I heard Simulationszeitalter and Sex With The Machines, but he seems to have gone downhill since. The sparse, minimal quality of his earlier work is what really hooked me. His new material doesn't seem to have the same feel.

I personally think that Rother is like the member Kraftwerk never had. To say that he is a rip-off of Kraftwerk is a bit like saying that any music made with electronic instruments is a rip of off Kraftwerk - are they not the pioneers of elecrto(nic)music?
If anything, Rother is more like an extention of Kraftwerk. A lot a people are, but he does it so well it stands out as being more Kraftwerk'ish.
Just listen to the Karl Bartos remix of Rother's remake of Terry Lancaster's "Little Computer people" classic; who's ripping off who?????

Anthony Rother is reaching the dark parts of Kraftwerk that they will never be able to find themselves.

A rip off? "NO"
Kraftwerk Part 2? "YES"

In response to Crijevo; I definitely agree with you in terms of later Rother releases, but tracks like his Schubdüse Remix for Sven Väth, the Sex with the Machines EP and also his first two singles as Psi Performer on K20 were not without inspiration - sadly, shortly after he founded PSI49NET things went down the tubes.

Oh yes, he has everything to make a good irresistable electro beat - he kicks ass, he is a little computer man, but if you listen to it closely all he has is expensive high-tech and a nerve to rip-off Kraftwerk over and over again, hiding behind countless and already tasted 'techno/electro-pop' robotics of 'Computer-Welt', 'Musique Non-Stop' or ' Numbers' and shamelessly stealing their crown.

Started making music for hacker demos on the Commodore 64 Personal/Game Computer.
In 1988 he produced his first record. In 1994 he approached on Kanzleramt Records with the project "Not Signal". In 1996 he formed together with Heiko Laux the "Sodiac" project. In the year 1997 was the first release of the "Psi Performer" 12", followed by a second in the same year. At this time he already has started the work on the well-known electronic album "Sex with the machines". It took him more than one year to complete this mission. He remixed Sven Väth, Kraftwerk and also Thomas Schumacher... What else can we say? Mr. Rothers music speaks for it self...

"I want to tell something, I want to include stories in my tracks, I want to say something, and it's up to everybody himself to decide if it's important or not. (Anthony Rother, Groove Magazine 1998)

It's 2000. During the last years Anthony Rother has become one of electronic music's top acts. He's one of a few who is doing statements, who's respected for his ability to reflect, and some might say he is his biggest critic...

"The idea of a track is very spontaneous, but to create a song from a track is hard work". (Anthony Rother, de:bug interview)

Anthony Rother's first release was in 1988. His first productions are inspired by John Carpenter Soundtracks, that's why they are more soundscape like and close to music for films. But one thing seems to be decided already: Music as a medium to transport emotions and statements.

The point when it really started was when Anthony Rother met Heiko Laux, the founder and owner of Kanzleramt records, where also their first release came out and many more followed.... Heiko Laux is also one of the few people Anthony is willing to produce with. "Sex with the machines", maybe the most important and also most known release of Anthony Rother was also released on Kanzleramt. He worked more than one year on the EP before he was satisfied with it. While Heiko Laux was concentrating on the label work and created one of Techno's leading Labels (Kanzleramt), Anthony Rother became one of electronic music's most interesting artists. He released on labels like PSI49NET, Kanzleramt, Elektrolux and some more.

PSI49NET, Rother's own label, brings the platform for more, like the pop-oriented project "Little Computer People". Watch out for the recently released remixes of that great tune done by Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos and Kanzleramt head Heiko Laux. Another really important release on his label is the interpretation of the classic Kraftwerk track "Trans Europe Express", which became soon a Club hit and was played by nearly every DJ in the world.

"Trans Europe Express", "Don’t stop the beat" and "Little Computer People" are productions, which prove the restless work of Rother to create his own Sound and to avoid to stand still. But Anthony Rother has been also asked for some remix productions, like for Sven Väth's "Schubdüse" or Thomas Schumacher’s "When I rock" and he did more than a good job… The fact that Sven Väth has chosen him to produce 4 Tracks of his upcoming album "contact" speaks for itself. Pathfinder, Ydolem, Once More and Agent P. are the productions of these two personalities in the world of electronic music.

The "contact" tour will bring you some of Anthony Rother's live Performances, where he also plays Tracks of his upcoming new album which was produced during the last twelve months, where Rother decided to reflect about what has happened and what will follow.... The album "Simulationszeitalter" offers lots of songs, not tracks. Well arranged, perfectly edited sounds, are the receipt of this very special release.
