At the Gates was formed in 1990 with members Tomas Lindberg (vocals), Anders Bjorler (guitars), Adrian Erlandsson (drums), Jonas Bjorler (bass) and Alf Svensson (guitars). Same year they recorded the EP "Gardens of Grief" which was released by the label Dolores. They then went on a Swedish tour with bands such as Dismember, Bolt Thrower, Massacre and Immolation. After the tour they were signed to Peaceville Records who released their debut album "The Red in the Sky Is Ours" in 1991. It was a success in the Death Metal underground.
After a tour with My Dying Bride they replaced Alf Svensson with Martin Larsson and recorded the album "With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness". It was released in 1993. They went on another tour, this time with Cradle of Fear and Anathema. In 1994 they released "Terminal Spirit Disease" which was another success. A lot of tours followed.
The band were eventually signed to Earache Records and entered the studio one last time. "Slaughter of the Soul" was the result and it was released in 1995. They won various awards and also joined major tours in the US with Morbid Angel, Napalm Death etc. Shortly after, the band split.
After the split up Anders and Jonas Bjorler and Adrian formed The Haunted and Tomas Lindberg joined The Crown.
In 2001, a compilation by the name "Suicidal Final Art" was released.
