Baccara was a group that originally consisted of and was created by Mayte Mateos (born on 7 February 1951) and María Mendiola (born on 4 April 1952). The group was formed in 1977 and had a very good career until 1981, when the girls decided to split after María felt her voice was not getting the recognition it deserved on the records. As María went on a solo career, Mayte continued to work as Baccara (sometimes calling herself New Baccara which had nothing to do with María's future New Baccara), taking several different partners over the years including Jane Comerford, Gina T & Marissa Perez (born Maryse Peres). After gaining no success, Mayte decided to go on a solo career as well. Soon after, María Mendiola decided to try group singing again and ending up getting with the recently dropped Baccara singer, Marissa Perez. María's group was named New Baccara to set it apart from Mayte's disbanded Baccara. New Baccara began to release their own personal material as well as several re-recordings and re-recording remixes of Baccara's tracks. Then, for an unknown reason, New Baccara dropped the New becoming simply Baccara but, still staying separate from Mayte's old one. Soon after, while Baccara (Maíra & Marissa) continued to release tracks, Mayte formed another Baccara with Christina Sevilla which was then named Baccara 2000. After releasing an album & several singles (including a re-recording remix of "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" called "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie '99"), Baccara 2000 (Mayte & Christina) dropped the 2000 and also went simply by Baccara. Afterwards, in 2004 Mayte dropped Christina and instead started singing with Paloma Blanco. Mayte never got back with María, and María has always had the steady partner of Marissa Perez after leaving Mayte. Since then each group has continued to make original tracks, re-recordings, remixes & even re-recording remixes. It is because of this & the several name changes on both sides, that it is very difficult to tell (both for fans and the record companies themselves) who is releasing what at any given time.
