Beherit (the Syriac name for Satan) was formed in Finland, 1989, by Nuclear Holocausto Vengeance (vocalist/guitarist), Black Jesus (bass) and Sodomatic Slaughter (drums). In 1990 they released two demos "7th Blasphemy" and "Demonomancy". The notorious German label Turbo Music signed the band and the first releases were the "Dawn Of Satan's Millenium" Picture 7" and a split 7" with Death Yell in 1991.
Turbo Music sent the band a generous $100 to record their debut album while the band preferred to spend that money on booze and drugs instead. However, Turbo Music went ahead and bootlegged Beherit's "Demonomancy" demo and released it as "The Oath of Black Blood" in 1991. After this, the band terminated their dealings with Turbo Music.
In order to prevent trouble with Turbo Music, Beherit recorded a demo under the name The Lord Diabolus in 1991 and also released a promo tape in 1992 which led to a deal with Spinefarm Records. In 1993 "Drawing Down The Moon" was released. Shortly after the other members left the band leaving Holocausto alone. He recorded the "Messe Des Morts" 7" by himself which was released in 1994 by Necropolis records (also as part of a Split CD with Archgoat).
The band also had a reputation for having an extreme live show (Pig heads, goat on stage etc).
In 1994 the band, now solo, already released another album, "H418ov21.C". The band had now turned into ambient music. Another album was released in 1996, "Electric Doom Synthesis". Holocausto eventually ended Beherit after the release.
In 1999 a compilation was released, "Beast of Beherit".
In 2008 the original members Holocausto and Sodomatic Slaughter reformed the band, now as a four-piece featuring new members Ancient Corpse Desekrator and Abyss.
