Betty Boo

Real Name:
Alison Moira Clarkson
Profile:
At school, Alison Clarkson trained to be a sound engineer. Prior to her number 7 UK hit "Hey DJ I Can't Dance (To That Music You're Playing)" with Beatmasters, The, she was a vocalist for She Rockers and Hit 'N' Run. Her (mostly self-produced) debut solo album, "Boomania", spawned two further top ten hits. Boo won the 1991 Brit Award for Best Pop Artist and signed to WEA International Inc.. But this second, major label, album was not a sales success, and a world tour was cancelled when it was revealed she was lip-synching her live vocals. Alison Clarkson returned to the industry in 1997 as a songwriter. She co-wrote "Pure and Simple" for Hear'Say - the fastest selling single in the history of the UK charts, and has also written for Girls Aloud.

Reviews & Discussion

Review by airwolffliesagain Jul 30, 2011
I love Betty Boo! I fell in love with her and her music the moment I bought my first CD single: Where are you Baby? brilliantly remixed by Shep Pettibone, John Coxon & Razormaid. I still listen to it and have bought virtually all the album CDs and single CDs by Betty Boo I could find. She made excellent uplifting dance music, ranging from acid house, garage, hip hop, rap, techno, and pop with a 60's feel. I find it is so sad this talented beautiful artist never had the recognition she deserves. But in my world and in my dance music collection she rules! And I keep on playing all her dancetunes practically every day. Thank you Betty Boo !!! :)

Betty Boo may not have been the greatest rapper, singer or producer (though she was more than competent at all three) but her records were always enormous fun. You won't hear them played out much nowadays, but the UK hits "Doin' The Do" and "Where Are You Baby?" can still raise a smile.
Shame her more sophisticated material didn't do so well - "Hangover", though not really a dance record as such, was one of the great lost pop singles of the 90s.
