B. Eno

Real Name:
Brian Peter George St John Le Baptiste De La Salle Eno
Profile:
Brian Eno (born May 15, 1948) is an electronic musician who started his musical career with Roxy Music. He then went on to produce a number of highly eclectic and increasingly ambient electronic and acoustic albums. He is widely cited as coining the term "ambient music" in his Ambient series (Music for Airports, The Plateaux Of Mirror, Day Of Radiance and On Land). He collaborated with David Byrne, formerly of Talking Heads, on My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts which was one of the first albums not in the rap or hip hop genres to extensively feature sampling. Eno collaborated with David Bowie as a writer and musician on Bowie's influential "Berlin trilogy" of albums, Low, Heroes and Lodger, on Bowie's later album 1. Outside, and on the song I'm Afraid Of Americans. Eno has also collaborated with Robert Fripp of King Crimson, Robert Wyatt on his Shleep CD, with Jon Hassell and with the German duo Cluster. Eno has acted as a producer for a number of bands, including U2 and James. He won the best Producer award at the 1994 and 1996 BRIT awards. He is an innovator across many fields of music and collaborated on the development of the Koan algorithmic music generator. He has also been involved in the field of visual arts. The band A Certain Ratio took their name from the lyrics of Eno's song 'The True Wheel' from Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). In 1996 Brian Eno, and others, started the Long Now Foundation to educate the public into thinking about the very long term future of society. Brian Eno is also a columnist for the British newspaper, The Observer.

Reviews & Discussion

I have heard reviewers who were critical of Brian Eno's works claim that they were essentially just elevator music or mood music. And I must say, they are completely and totally correct. And that's what makes Eno so great. The fact that in a genre of music not intended to stand out, Brian Eno somehow manages to stand out is a testament to his genius. He is the king of ambient music. His columnism under the name C. S. J. Bofop (B. R. I. Aneno) says it all. "You may not notice it changing. But you will notice it not getting boring." You have to listen to him at least once in your lifetime, if you can. Try it, you'll like it.

Brian Eno is quite simply a genius. A master of ambience. I never fully appreciated his work until 20 or so (30 in some cases) years after its release. Any artist that produces music that stands the test of the time deserves the highest of accolades. His ambient work is simply timeless, sounds which get better with age. Take time to absorb his work fully.

If you were around in the 70's you may remember a t-shirt that had "Eno is God" written on it. It's hard to sum up the importance of Eno's musical output from his post-Roxy music days (solo and Fripp collaborations) to his ground-breaking production work, etc. If you like anything that can be described as "ambient", you owe it to yourself to check out Eno. I recommend starting with "Another Green World" which is where you can see a cross-over from pop format to ambient soundscape.

He is THE man! He is, without a doubt, the most influential musician of the last 40 years, be it directly or not. His output speaks for itself. And believe me: you do not know about electronic music if you never heard anything done by this man. A true genius!

in order for everyone to appreciate electronic music properley, you have to have heard it's roots. Brian Eno is without a doubt one of the original pioneers of what we call elctronic music/techno/etc today. I recommend that you at least have a couple of tunes in your collection, true fans of the cause will agree that there isn't much of a shelf life with many tunes around today, Eno proves that you can make electronica that lasts for years!
