Reviews & Discussion

Review by dEfMAN Mar 30, 2008
As if Cobain had taken "grunge" itself with him to the grave leaving only a few bands that kept the same idiology, vocalist Gavin Rossdale with his band Bush struck out from Britain into North America with a similar feeling and sound grunge carried with their album Sixteen Stone, that bit of obscurity and depression bands had but with a more electronic european ambient, Bush clearly stablishes the bounderies of what would be the end of the Grunge movement and the becoming of Post-Grunge music, more likely it can be said that the band Bush is a pioneer into this newer genre, although they are integrated of a much more wider spirit ranging from Alternative Rock to Post-Punk.

It seemed that the grunge/techno collision was limited to a few fixes in some songs, but in the album called Deconstructed the band summerged fully into a electronic sound chopping, mixing and re-mixing, fomer hits and singles with producers like Derek DeLarge and the Dub Pistols, this two in between others, re-creating the concept of Bush giving it a much wider personality.

Bush (cue the laughter) came around in 1994-95, roughly around the time of Kurt Cobain's death. Non-Seattle grunge bands (as well as grunge overall - if you believe that there was such thing as "grunge") were loosing in popularity, while Bush was actually getting more and more popular. Part of it had to do with the fact that Gavin Rossdale voice was damn similar to Cobain, another part had to do with his natural good looks. Bush also relied on the use of electronics, which was anathema for most of popular Seattle bands. None of that, in my opinion, actually help matters. The worst problem is a total lack of energy in most of their songs. Lyrics are either embarassingly silly or represent complete nonsense (for the sake of an argument, one must notice that many of Cobain lyrics are not that perfect either). So its hard to tell whether people are attracted to this band because of Gavin good looks/voice nearly identical to Cobain or music.
